Here’s what 18 hours of motion design looks like

Marc Ferrer creates eye candy in the form of 3D design. His CGI creations are often mesmerizing. However, what seems to be a simple loop takes hours of work to become so easy to look at.

The unique 3D gear loop below took 18 hours total. 12 hours went into researching how to create it, calculations, and the design. Followed by 6 hours of rendering in Cinema 4D.

Marc Ferrer: What motivates me is to solve a problem. I have some idea in my head that I don’t even know if it’s even possible to do, then I try to accomplish it as close as I have it in my mind. I really enjoy the feeling when I succeed, but I also have a lot of halfway projects that I still can’t resolve. I find it really fun and engaging, also I learn a lot of new stuff.

With Marc’s creative process in mind, it’s interesting to see how it comes to life. There’s an argument to be made that being creative boils down to solving problems. For the project’s Marc hasn’t finished, there are two problems: the initial problem he’s looking to solve, and the problem of how to finish it.

One takeaway from Marc’s creative process is that what appears to be simple often takes a lot of time and effort to create. When you have a simple idea that turns out difficult to create, stick with it! It will be worth seeing the results.
